"الحبر كالدم ، ينزف من الجرح".
ربما هو جرح الهوية النازف من عروق امين معلوف المولود عام 1949 في بيروت، في عائلة امتهنت الكتابة و التعليم ابا عن جد.
أمضى طفولته في رأس بيروت، مكان متعدد الثقافات الانسانية، شكّل تفتح براعمه الاولى على الاخر. في عمر الست سنوات كتب مقاله الاول آملا من والده (صاحب جريدة الجريدة) نشره، لكن الوالد لم ينشر المقال فكانت خيبة معلوف الاولى التي لا تمحى من ذاكرته.
في سن الخامسة عشرة، تمرد على النظام الطائفي ، خارجا بذلك عن تقاليد المجموعة التي ينتمي اليها، فعاش صراعا قصير الامد مع والده.
درس علم الاجتماع و الاقتصاد و استهل حياته المهنية في جريدة النهار.
تزوج باكرا و استقر مع عائلته الصغيرة في منطقة عين الرمانة، هناك، شاء القدر ان يكون شاهد عيان على حادثة البوسطة التي قلبت مجرى الحياة في بلاده، مراقباً ما خلّفته من قتلى.
رفض الانحياز الى فريق ضد آخر عند اندلاع الحرب. هو الذي لم يخطر بباله يوما ان يصبح مهاجرا، هجر لبنان الى فرنسا عام 1976 مكملا بذلك تاريخ عائلته المليء بالهجرة، متخذا من الكتابة وطنا بديلا.
في فرنسا ترأس تحرير مجلة (جون أفريق) أصدر كتابه الاول " حروب الصليبيين من خلال عيون العرب" عام 83 .
بعد نجاح الكتاب، هجر العمل الصحفي وكرس وقته للكتابة الروائية ،فكانت رواية ليون الافريقي التي شكلت منعطفا اساسيا في حياته ككاتب روائي.
من ليون الافريقي الى سمرقند ثم حدائق النور، صخرة طانيوس و اساكل المشرق و غيرها الكثير من الكتب، تكرّس امين معلوف كواحد من رواد الرواية التاريخية التي شهدت رواجا عالميا .
عام 93 نال كتابه صخرة طانيوس، اهم جائزة ادبية في فرنسا (الغونكور) هذه الرواية التي تحكي اوجاع لبنان الذي لا يزال اسير الاقطاعات القديمة و الجديدة.
باعت كتبه في فرنسا وحدها ستة ملايين نسخة .
يعيش معلوف ستة اشهر من السنة في جزيرة معزولا عن العالم مكرسا أيامه للكتابة .
